Jiří Šerých – Je to už dávno / Cela fait déjà longtemps

The Czech art historian Jiří Šerých gave us permission to print this unpublished text Věra Jirousová had asked him to write for a monograph on Bohuslav Reynek that she was preparing but did not finish because of her death.

In 1966, Šerých was the first to inventory Reynek’s graphic work. With help from the engraver and, later, his sons, he collected essential data about the works in the studio collection at the time, which numbered over 300 and were unorganised on account of the artist’s legendary carelessness.

The text, written at a time when Reynek was not allowed to exhibit his work, recalls his earliest admirers’ visits to Petrkov, the Reynek exhibitions that young friends organised in precarious conditions just before the Prague Spring and the engraver and his family’s humble life, which never kept him from producing an immense body of work.
